Three weeks into my job as MinnPost editor, D.C. correspondent Ana Raadelat called with some good news. Dean Phillips, a U.S. Representative, had said to Chad Hartman that he hoped a Democrat would run for President in 2024.
Ana said that “No other Congressman has ever gone so far,” noting that MinnPost reporter Walker Orenstein had tweeted about it. She was correct. Phillips stated, “I believe it’s time to make a generational shift.”
Walker ran after U.S. Rep. Angie Craig at Farmfest in the 90 degree heat to ask her if she would support a Biden-led ticket for 2024. She said she was in “lockstep and alignment” to Phillips.
National outlets and TV shows cited both stories multiple times. They helped to illustrate the important divide between Minnesota Democrats during a difficult midterm election year, in which some candidates are best advised to distance themselves from President Trump.
